SELECTING THE RIGHT BAR STOOL HEIGHT

To begin, you should know that bar stools are typically available in three heights, counter height stools, bar height stools, and for some vendors, extra tall bar stools.

To determine the barstool height that will work best for you, you will first need to know the measurement from the floor to the underneath side of the surface where you are going to put the stools. It may be helpful to know that the standard counter height is 36” and the standard bar height is 40”.

Next subtract 10 inches from your measurement, to allow room for your legs. 10 inches is the recommended amount of clearance you will need, but you can go as little as 8 inches and as much as 12 inches. Once you start getting outside of this standard, many people feel that you are sitting too low, or too high, depending on your situation.

The measurement you get after subtracting the 10 inches for leg room should give you the seat height of the stool that you will need. Counter stools typically have a seat height range from 24-26 inches and bar stools have a seat height ranging from 29-31 inches.

If you find that your serving area is over 32 inches tall, chances are you will need an extra tall bar stool. The good news is that they are available and generally have a seat height of 34-36 inches tall, but you will probably find that many of these stools will be a little more expensive and not all vendors offer the extra tall option.
